Google has just released the latest version of their Android OS. Its name is the Android 8.1 Oreo and it’s the successor to Android 8.0, Android 7.1.2 Nougat, 7.1.1, and 7.0.

Let me use one or two paragraphs from this post to explain something very important about the Android ecosystem.

If you already have an idea what I am about to explain, just skip to the list.

As Android Oreo 8.0 came out a while ago, Google, as usual, will always make the new versions available for the devices they are supporting directly, these devices include Google Nexus and the pixel phones.

These smartphones run on the original Android OS which means that, their source codes have not been customized.

But when other OEMs like Samsung, LG, Huawei, and Xiaomi wants to use this new version they will first of all copy the original Android source code and then go back to modify and customize it to their own taste; adding and removing features, tweaking and modifying the UI to come up with their own brand UI and customized Android functionality and features.

By so doing, the new updates will only be available as an OTA update when the customization is complete. That’s why the users of phones from these OEMs will only get Android version updates sent to them weeks or months after Google has announced its release.

But, to get the update faster when you can’t wait for your OEM, or you are using an older phone which you know won’t be supported on the new update; that’s where companies like lineage OS comes in.

They will give you a custom ROM particularly built on the new Android update for your phone, and while your OEM will give you an update via OTA, companies like lineage OS will give you an update faster and also a more customized Android OS that sometimes its features will be sweeter than the one your OEM will send to your phone later on.

But one glitch here is that you have to flash the ROM directly into your phone. Which can be sometimes dangerous, but don’t worry, that’s why you’ve got blogs like this one around.

Lineage OS is one of the best in the industry and they are the successors to CyanogenMod which was my best until it went defunct.
